What is email triage?

Email triage is the process of quickly sorting and prioritizing incoming email — deciding what is urgent, what can wait, who should handle it, and what can be ignored.

The term borrows from medicine, where triage means treating the most serious cases first. For a busy inbox, triage is how a team keeps important messages from being buried under newsletters, receipts, and noise — and makes sure the right person sees the right message.

Done manually, triage eats time and is easy to get wrong. The goal is to categorize and route email consistently so response times stay fast even when volume spikes.
